Sacred Discourse

Speaking from
the Heart

What is Sacred Discourse?

Sacred Discourse is an intentional, heart-centered framework for having relational and connected conversations between individuals, within groups, and across society.

Sacred Discourse rests on the foundation that, before any word is spoken, we choose to be grounded in what is Sacred for each of us, with the intention that we leave the other person or group feeling, after the conversation, more whole, inspired, and connected.

In adopting the Sacred Discourse framework for our conversations, we remember what we already have learned, and know within, about how to relate. We rest in the wisdom of our ancestors and our teachers, as well as in our own felt experience of connection.

Often, the choice to use the Sacred Discourse framework is in response to some type of significant breakdown -- when the commitment to learn how to communicate differently is a necessity and more than a "nice to have." Other motivations may be a desire to create a culture based on inclusion and connection, and it can also be used to align team members with the shared goal of implementing a new vision or goal for the organization. The end result in any of these situations is a solid, embodied way of communicating that produces much better results for the team or organization.

Sacred Discourse is offered to any type of community that desires to cultivate new ways of interaction between its members, often with the goal of finding a new level of understanding, appreciation, or agreement. Sacred Discourse allows a community to develop a new paradigm for interaction, co-existence, and the furthering of common values and interests. A desire to implement Sacred Discourse may stem from entrenched conflict, or possibly diverging ideas about how to move forward. Similar to a team's response to a breakdown, a community may turn to Sacred Discourse when other methods have fallen short.

Sacred Discourse provides a pathway, or a way of being, for any configuration of two or more people to engage in a way that creates the possibility for more interaction and engagement. Starting with the premise that the relationship is paramount, being more important than reaching agreement on a particular topic, Sacred Discourse provides a pathway for people to relate and connect in a different way than they have before, most often resulting in a much deeper relationship, as well as new ways for how to move forward.

As we start to really get to know others, as we begin to listen to each other’s stories, things begin to change. We begin the movement from exclusion to inclusion, from fear to trust, from closedness to openness, from judgment and prejudice to forgiveness and understanding. It is a movement of the heart.
